The research of Prof. Greifeneder and her team at the Chair of Information Behavior focuses on user research. She is particularly concerned with people’s search and user behavior when dealing with information or metadata both while using a traditional library as well as in fields such as digital libraries or research data. Key aspects of her work include the use of online survey methods and natural habitat research as well as securing the validity of data in a laboratory setting and in natural environments. Additionally, users’ private information sharing behavior and context research are central issues in Prof. Greifeneder’s research.
Prof. Greifeneder and her team employ qualitative and quantitative research methods of information science with a focus on user research. This includes survey design and implementation, both online and in the form of natural habitat research, interviews, case studies, experiments, scientific observation, focus groups and eyetracking. The Chair of Information Behavior boasts a modern research laboratory, the iLab:
- The iLab consists of two functionally differentiated rooms, connected with a door made of spyglass, that contain mobile desks (height can be adjusted electronically), swivel chairs, mobile partition walls, magnetic glass boards and a facilitator’s toolbox
- Technical equipment: beamer, cameras, microphones, mobile sound recorders, tablets, notebooks, smart watches and eye-trackers
Prof. Weidlich is a professor at the Department of Computer Science, where he leads the Process-Driven Architectures research group. The goal of his team is to support and improve the design and the analysis of process-oriented information systems (POIS) and event-driven systems (ES). POIS are software systems that help to automate, monitor, and control processes. These systems are established in various domains, from logistics, through healthcare, to infrastructure monitoring. The team’s research focuses on formal methods for behavioural modelling and verification, event-driven approaches to monitor and control processes, as well as questions related to process-driven data integration. The group further works on techniques that optimise the run-time behaviour of event-driven systems. In particular, the evaluation of event queries over streams can be designed more efficiently once regularities within event streams have been detected. In 2016, Prof. Weidlich was named Junior Fellow of the German Informatics Society (Gesellschaft für Informatik, GI) and awarded with the Berlin Research Prize (Young Scientist) by the Governing Mayor of Berlin.

Prof. Schröder’s and his team’s research is focused on the non-destructive method of x-ray powder diffractometry to identify and characterise minerals. Subsequently, the powder samples can be analysed by other methods. The method of x-ray powder diffractometry and its content is closely related to the field of mineralogy and crystallography. Therefore, the method is used in materials research and building materials science. The team is working towards an implementation of the method in continuing and adult education, teaching and learning approaches. Materials suitable for x-ray powder diffractometry: Building materials, concrete, mortar, cement, fine and heavy ceramics, rocks, ores, sediments, ash, dust, filter and combustion residues. Potential fields of applications are: Clay mineralogical investigations (soil science - agriculture), archaeometric investigations (ancient colours and paints, bronze patina and archaeological ceramics), identification of unknown crystalline substances (fingerprinting), identification of crystalline phases, qualitative and semi-quantitative analyses of mixtures, isomorphisms, polymorphisms, determination of amorphous and crystalline states as well as state of crystallisation and particle sizes. The analysis is conducted with powder on a matrix < 32 µm and with texture specimen on a matrix < 2 µm.

Prof. Helbrecht focusses her research on the cultural, social and spatial development of cities. She investigates urban branding, city image and identity as well as the marketing thereof. Neighbourhood and urban development policies, urban governance, housing markets and demographic change are also topics of her research. Furthermore, Prof. Helbrecht conducts analyses of social space and studies concerning the public sphere and space. As the director of the Georg-Simmel-Centre for Metropolitan Studies (Georg-Simmel-Zentrums für Metropolenforschung / GSZ), platform for interdisciplinary urban research, and as a member of the Integrative Research Institute on Transformations of Human-Environment Systems (IRI THESys) Prof. Helbrecht is well connected in her field of expertise and prepared for interdisciplinary research projects.
